Features
- The GGM5 is a 5-Amp, 250V AC Midget-style (10mm times 38mm or 13/32" times 1-1/2") fast-acting glass fuse. It is a supplemental protection device commonly used in Canada for protecting non-inductive loads, such as control circuits, lighting ballasts, and small electronic instruments where high-speed clearing is required.
- Unlike time-delay fuses, the GGM series is fast-acting. This means it has no intentional time delay and will blow quickly upon sensing an overload or short circuit. It is ideal for protecting sensitive electronic components that cannot withstand the heat generated by a sustained overcurrent, but it should not be used for motors or transformers that have a high startup inrush.
- The fuse features a clear glass body with nickel-plated brass end caps. This allows for immediate visual verification; if the internal element is melted or the glass is discoloured, the fuse is blown. This is a significant advantage for quick troubleshooting in complex control panels.
- Under the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), Midget fuses like the GGM5 are considered supplemental protection. They are meant to protect a specific component inside a piece of equipment and cannot be used as a substitute for a "Branch Circuit" fuse (like a Class CC or Class J) which protects the actual building wiring.
- The 10mm times 38mm size is an industry standard. It fits into a wide variety of Canadian-made and international fuse blocks, DIN-rail mounted fuse holders (like the Mersen UltraSafe series), and "in-line" fuse holders used in street lighting or HVAC equipment.
